We work to create an inclusive environment for our diverse workforce, centered around our respect for human rights, and put our people at the heart of our business. We provide them with safe workplaces, care for their well-being and foster their involvement in creating a positive working environment.
Our Focus Areas
High occupational health and safety standards are the basis for assuring the safety, health and wellbeing of our people, our customers and other stakeholders who attend our sites. We regularly monitor health and safety regulations, industry standards and other best practice to meet our obligations and aim for compliance through regular internal and external audits.
We also work assiduously to eliminate health and safety hazards and incidents, including those that result in injuries and illnesses affecting our people. We continue to focus upon our “Vision Zero” initiative, a program that has led to a considerable reduction in safety incidents. Ultimately we strive for zero workplace injuries, process incidents, or environmental incidents.

We recognize and encourage an inclusive and diverse workforce and work environment and continue to embed this through our company values, one of which is Inclusion. Our Code of Conduct states that we do not tolerate any discrimination, harassment or bullying for any reason. This also applies to our business partners (both direct and indirect) throughout our supply chain.
Our Inclusion, Diversity and Belonging (IDB) initiative promotes inclusion and reflects diversity across backgrounds, characteristics, preferences, beliefs and perspectives with the goal of ensuring Lonza colleagues feel a sense of belonging. Lonza’s IDB initiative supports Lonza’s mission of making a meaningful difference by celebrating the difference we make together.
The RiseUp@Lonza program, an employee resource group dedicated to creating opportunities for women to build relationships, gain confidence and be inspired, was financially and logistically supported by Lonza in 2023. The business sponsored the platform for the RiseUp mentoring program and encouraged colleagues to join global events of the initiative.
Gender Equality multi-year roadmap has been established with initiatives to build a strong pipeline of female leaders and to support sustainable representation of females in leadership.
Target
We aim to increase the percentage of women in management roles to 35% by 2035.
Community engagement is at the center of our sustainability agenda. Our purpose to enable a healthier world extends beyond its commercial activities. In many communities, we take on multiple roles: as a neighbor, a source of employment, a sponsor of local non-profit organizations and in many cases a significant contributor to the local economy.
As sustainability is a strategic priority, we take an active and robust approach to environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics through a variety of programs. We focus our charitable giving and volunteer activities on projects that align with our selected SDGs, and where we feel that our contributions can make a significant difference. We evaluate the recipients of financial contributions to ensure they promote high standards of ethics and compliance and incur a low proportion of administrative expenses.
While our financial donations are important, our greatest contributions come from our employees who volunteer in projects that are meaningful to our communities. Each employee is granted one day off per calendar year to engage in volunteering activities.
Progress
In 2023, Lonza employees gave back over 26,300 hours of volunteering to local communities. We have formed a network of colleagues from larger sites – those with more than 100 employees – to share best practices and experiences for corporate responsibility. This team connects on a quarterly basis and representatives from each site share updates on volunteering and other community engagement programs.
Our Code of Conduct provides behavioral guidance and expectations to help all colleagues understand that doing what is right every day matters. All colleagues and contract workers are required to complete the training annually, up to and including our Executive Committee and our Board of Directors. Other global training topics beyond our Code of Conduct include anti-bribery, anti-corruption, discrimination and harassment, confidentiality and information security, conflicts of interest, fair competition (anti-trust), protection of assets, speaking up, unconscious bias, and workplace safety. In addition, we operate the "Lonza Ethics Hotline" to capture potential unethical conduct.
We periodically review and update our policies to address changes of laws and regulations and strengthen compliance.
