Sustainable value creation is an ethical, social and commercial imperative for Lonza, and a collective responsibility shared by our global community.

Evolving from an early producer of hydroelectricity and chemical products into one of the world’s largest contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs), dedicated to serving the healthcare industry, Lonza has a long-standing commitment to safety and sustainability. Across our global network, we create value by enhancing social engagement, strengthening our governance, and reducing our environmental footprint.

Our Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals

We grouped our sustainability initiatives around material themes and selected key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs comprise the global blueprint of the United Nations (UN) to achieve a better and sustainable future for humanity. We have selected seven of the 17 UN SDGs that are most relevant to our business. Each of our priority SDGs has been directly assigned to an Executive Committee member who – in turn – is supported by a Program Manager to initiate and execute an effective cross-functional program built around each goal. Since 2022, executive compensation and global performance-based rewards have been aligned with our SDGs and related metrics.

Good Health and Wellbeing

We collaborate with our customers to produce patient treatments and bring new therapies to market with the support of novel services and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. The safety and wellbeing of our global workforce also represents a top priority across our global network.

Climate Action

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contribute to global warming, affecting the climate and impacting the health of people and planet. We are taking decisive steps to reduce our GHG emissions in pursuit of our ambition to reach net-zero by 2050.

Gender Equality

We gain and maintain our competitive advantage and strength by having a diverse global employee community, which embraces the value and benefit of differences in characteristic, preference, perspective and belief.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

We continuously invest in innovation while further improving our operational excellence. We are also creating vital, game-changing technologies, including gene editing systems and automated therapy manufacturing systems. We aim to embed sustainability into our organic growth and footprint expansion by design.

Responsible Consumption and Production

We continue to reduce our impact on the environment and have programs to limit our material consumption and waste generation. We aspire to source materials from responsible suppliers that meet strict compliance standards and have actions in place to reduce their emissions, waste, natural resources in line with our expectations, in addition to a climate action plan which supports Lonza’s Scope 3 emissions reduction plan.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Access to clean, plentiful and potable water is a basic human need and critical to ensure the quality of our products. We need to protect the water ecosystem to ensure that they are not contaminated by pharmaceutical substances or other pollutants.

Quality Education

We recognize that our people are the cornerstone of our success and we want to see them grow. As we develop innovations in pharma, biotech and nutrition, we aim to increase partnerships and our contribution to the scientific community.
