Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an excellent opportunity for a Lead Scientist to join the R&D group working on lab scale bioreactor process development and automation at their Slough, UK location.

The purpose of the role is to maintain Lonza Pharma & Biotech as a leading contract manufacturer through the development and optimization of fed-batch and perfusion process technologies at lab scale employing automation engineering solution. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the upstream R&D team; plans and executes several complex (non-routine) lab & Pilot scale fed batch and perfusion bioreactor process development and optimization experiments
  • Hands on expertise at using and troubleshooting
    • automation solutions like DeltaV
    • configure & program integrated control system like PLCs, DSCs, and SACA
    • control loop feedback like PID controllers
    • automated bioreactor sampling systems
  • ​Generates experimental results and reviews respective scientific documentation
  • ​Is responsible for ensuring that studies are scientifically sound and in line with current regulatory guidance and expectations
  • ​Helps with ensuring lab procedures are adhered to and supports safety assessments
  • ​Design, develop, and implement automated systems to optimize upstream bioprocessing workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand process requirements and translate them into efficient automation solutions.
  • Lead and work collaboratively across departments with automation design and  lead electrical engineers, communicate openly, and foster a learning environment for the team
  • Design, implement and maintain automation engineering solution across various scales bioreactor
  • Assist in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of automated process and facility equipment and control systems
  • Support equipment startup, commissioning, and qualification activities
  • Work in close collaboration with IT/OT/Network Infrastructure and Security Teams to ensure a reliable and secure automated manufacturing environment
  • Support updates to and maintenance of data historian systems 
  • Familiarity with Biopharma 4.0 digitalization
  • Complying with the required relevant Lonza training
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What we need you to have:

  • BSc / MSc / BEng / MEng Field of Study Industrial Controls / Automation / Electrical Engineering / Bioprocessing / Chemical Engineering or similar field
  • Experience in biotech/pharmaceutical setting up automation, instrumentation and controls at least 5-6 years
  • Broad and detailed technology competence in cell culture procedures and handling HTP formats like microplates, deep well plate, shake flask, ambr15
  • Demonstrated innovative skills and experience with leading complex technology projects.
  • High level of communication and presentation skills.
