Following an internal promotion, we have an exciting opportunity available for a subject matter expert (SME) in the field of CGT, embedded within our Licensing Business Unit. The main purpose of this role is to provide scientific and technical support to mammalian CGT expression system licensees, the LI BU BD and technical support teams, and Lonza internal customers. This role plays an important part in showcasing Lonza’s expertise to the external world, helping to solve problems for existing customers and to cultivate a future pipeline of customers.

This role is ideal for someone with an interest in the combination of a) building & maintaining deep scientific and technical expertise and b) sharing it with customers / helping solve customers’ problems.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide scientific and technical expertise in designated SME area(s)
    • SME area: CGT (essential), molecular biology (desirable)
  • Support licensing BD activities by promoting out-licensed CGT offers and aligned technologies and services
  • Lead resolution of issues (technical, scientific, IP, regulatory, etc) that have affected, or have the potential to affect, mammalian CGT expression system licensees from developing CGT products
    • With emphasis on the CGT and molecular biology aspects of the process
    • Includes responding to and guiding customers through basic use of Lonza technologies 
    • Includes following up with customers to ensure their ongoing success
  • Provides scientific and technical support in the promotion of Lonza’s technologies to help acquire new customers and retain mammalian CGT licensees
    • Participate in industry conferences
    • Provide scientific and technical support at activities and initiatives instigated by the licensing BU to promote Lonza technologies (e.g. roadshows, symposiums, etc.)
    • Provide collateral that promotes Lonza technologies and / or supports mammalian CGT system licensees (e.g. manuals, website, etc.)
    • Ensure technical data in promotional materials, especially in Lonza’s digital presence, is maintained up to date
    • Train and mentor the next generation of scientists to support the BU at conferences and activities / initiatives designed to promote Lonza technology
  • Support Lonza’s innovation strategy by working closely with R&D groups and Licensing on the assessment of new technologies
  • Provide technical advice for launch of new licensing packages relating to SME area
  • Working with appropriate colleagues, enhance, maintain, develop and ensure protection of Lonza’s IP portfolio in relevant areas
    • Includes raising awareness of the value of IP, and establishing and ensuring compliance in what information can be shared with licensees, to the technical support team and other relevant groups
  • Travel requirements: 10%

Key requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s level education in a relevant discipline, in combination with further study or practical work experience in the field of Cell & Gene Therapy or other relevant subject area.
  • Advanced experience in the Biotech / biopharma industry with demonstrable depth of knowledge and understanding of CGT
  • Proven expertise in working with customers and solving complex problems with them, showing excellent collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
  • Recognise and disseminate information about emerging trends (scientific, technical, IP, etc) in SME area that impact Lonza’s ability to acquire / retain new customers
  • Have good knowledge of IP and patent landscape in SME area
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively to everyone from external customers to junior scientists to the senior leadership team.
  • Uses position and expertise to promote Lonza externally
  • Passionate about the science and finding solutions
